Stock perps on Hyperliquid

Equity perpetuals let you hold a position in a single company almost around the clock, settled in USD-denominated collateral, without a brokerage account. The trade-off is that the underlying share only trades for part of the day — and that gap is where most of the risk lives.

Prices and volume come from our hourly snapshot pipeline; leverage and session details come from the operator specification for each market. Informational only — not investment advice.

How a stock perp is priced when the market is closed

A stock perpetual on a Hyperliquid builder dex never holds a share. It references one, through an oracle. While the listing exchange is open, the oracle is derived from external market data for the underlying security, so the perp tracks the cash price closely.

Outside those hours the external feed stops. The published mechanics switch to an internal price that advances from the last external print using an exponentially weighted moving average of the order book, with a documented time constant of about 30 minutes. In plain terms: overnight the price is set by what traders on the venue itself are willing to bid and offer, anchored to the last real quote, and it snaps back to the external reference on the next tick once the exchange reopens.

Non-US listings add a currency step. Korean, Japanese, Hong Kong and China A-share names are quoted in their local currency and converted to USD by the oracle at the prevailing FX rate, so the perp carries both the equity move and the currency move. Some of those markets also follow their local session hours rather than the 24/5 schedule most US names use.

Why traders use a perp instead of the share

Continuous access is the main reason. Earnings land after the US close and guidance moves stocks overnight; a perp can be entered or exited during those hours, while the cash market cannot. Positions are collateralised and settled in USD terms on-chain, so there is no separate broker, no custody of foreign shares and no settlement cycle.

Leverage is available and varies by market — the official specification index lists roughly 10x to 20x for single names, with tighter limits on less liquid ones. Higher leverage narrows the distance to liquidation proportionally; it does not change the direction of the underlying.

Each market also carries a discovery bound, a cap on how far the traded price may sit from the oracle. It dampens manipulation in thin overnight books, but it can also stop you exiting at the price you want during a fast move.

Risks specific to equity perps

Closing gaps are the defining risk. News between the close and the reopen is absorbed in a single jump when external pricing resumes, and stops placed inside that gap can be filled far from where they were set. Overnight liquidity on the perp is usually thinner than during the cash session, so slippage is wider precisely when it matters.

Corporate actions do not reach you the way they reach a shareholder. A perp position is not stock: it carries no voting rights, no dividend and no claim on the issuer. Dividends, splits and other adjustments are handled by the market operator through the oracle or contract specification rather than paid out, so check the market specification before holding across an ex-dividend or split date.

Funding is a running cost or credit, charged hourly on Hyperliquid, and it can persist in one direction for weeks when positioning is one-sided. On a multi-week equity view that cost can exceed the move you are trading. Delisting, listing suspension and trading halts in the underlying are also possible; when the external feed goes away for an extended period, the market runs on its internal mechanism until the operator decides otherwise.
