Index perps on Hyperliquid
Index perpetuals are the closest thing here to a macro instrument: one position for the direction of an entire equity market, with the highest documented leverage and the tightest price bounds of any asset class on these venues. The mechanics are more layered than they look, because the oracle changes source during the day.

Prices and volume come from our hourly snapshot pipeline; oracle sources, leverage and discovery bounds come from the operator specification for each market. Informational only — not investment advice.
Two oracles, one market
The US index markets switch reference during the day. During the extended session the oracle follows the corresponding equity index future; during the cash session it follows the spot index level. The specification index states this explicitly for the S&P 500 market and for the Nasdaq-style XYZ100 market. The switch matters because futures and cash can diverge — the futures basis reflects overnight news and financing, so the perp can print a level the cash index has not reached yet.
Index markets also observe a maintenance window each weekday afternoon ET and follow futures holiday closures, so there are scheduled periods with no external pricing at all. During those windows the internal order-book mechanism carries the price.
The Japan and Korea index markets work differently again: the specification describes them as quanto derivatives. The oracle follows the index level in its own local currency without FX conversion, and profit and loss is cash-settled in USDC. You are trading index points, not the yen or won value of those points — which removes currency exposure from the position, but also means the perp will not track a USD-converted chart of the same index.
Why trade an index perp
One position instead of a basket. Index exposure strips out single-name risk, which is why these markets carry the highest documented leverage of the group — around 50x on the S&P 500 market and 30x on the Nasdaq-style market, versus 10x to 20x on individual stocks. The discovery bounds are correspondingly tight, ±2% and ±3.5% respectively, because the oracle is well supported.
For a crypto-native account, an index perp is also the simplest way to express or hedge a macro view without leaving the collateral pool. If a portfolio is long risk assets generally, a short index position is a blunt but immediate offset.
And because the market runs through the overnight and weekend windows, positioning ahead of a Monday open or a scheduled macro release does not require waiting for the futures session to reopen.
Risks specific to index perps
High leverage is the headline risk. At 50x, a 2% move against the position wipes the margin backing it, and index markets do move 2% on a CPI print or a policy surprise. The tight discovery bound does not protect you from the underlying move; it only bounds how far the traded price may sit from the oracle.
Oracle handover creates gaps of its own. The transition between futures and cash reference at session boundaries can produce a step in the printed price that is a mechanical artefact rather than a market move, and stops sitting on that level may be triggered by it.
For the quanto markets, understand what you are not getting: no currency exposure. A trader who is bullish Japanese equities because of a weak yen is expressing only half of that view here. And as with every market in this section, index perps pay no dividends, hourly funding accrues throughout, and holiday closures leave stretches with no external reference at all.
