Commodity perps on Hyperliquid

Commodity perpetuals put gold, crude and industrial metals into the same margin account as everything else you trade, quoted in USD and settled continuously. What you are tracking underneath differs by market — some reference a spot metal, others a dated futures contract — and that difference changes how the position behaves over time.

Spot metals and futures-referenced energy are not the same thing

Precious metals generally reference a spot rate: gold against XAU/USD, silver XAG/USD, platinum XPT/USD, palladium XPD/USD. There is no expiry embedded in the reference, so the perp tracks the metal directly and the only carry you pay is funding.

Energy and several industrial and agricultural markets are different. Brent, WTI and natural gas reference a specific dated futures contract on a third-party price feed. A futures contract expires, so the market operator moves the reference forward on a published roll schedule. When the new contract trades above the old one the curve is in contango and rolling costs the long side; when it trades below, backwardation works the other way.

Commodity markets on the builder dexes also run on a slightly different clock from equities. The specification index shows most of them open from Sunday evening ET through Friday afternoon ET, with a daily maintenance window and futures holiday closures. Outside those hours the same internal oracle mechanism used elsewhere carries the price from the last external print.

Why trade a commodity as a perpetual

A perp removes the operational overhead. There is no futures account, no margin call in a separate venue, no expiry to manage and no physical delivery — the contract is cash-settled and stays open until you close it. Exposure sits in the same collateral pool as the rest of your positions.

Documented leverage runs from around 10x on the more volatile markets such as natural gas up to roughly 25x on precious metals, with a discovery bound per market limiting how far price may trade from the oracle. Metals in particular are often traded as a macro hedge rather than a directional bet, which is a different use case from single-name equity perps.

Access is the other draw. Uranium, TTF gas, aluminium and agricultural benchmarks are difficult to reach without a futures broker; here they sit next to everything else, in the same account, with the same collateral.

Risks specific to commodity perps

Roll is the risk most often underestimated. On futures-referenced markets, a persistent contango means the reference price steps down at each roll even when the commodity itself is flat, which erodes a long position held across several rolls. Read the roll schedule for the specific market before holding one for months.

Commodity volatility is event-driven and rarely gradual. Natural gas, in particular, can move on weather and inventory data faster than a leveraged position can be adjusted; that is why the documented leverage caps on those markets are lower than on metals.

Holiday closures and the daily maintenance window mean there are periods when external pricing is unavailable and the market runs internally. Funding is charged hourly and compounds on a multi-week hold. And as with every perp here, the contract is a cash-settled derivative — it delivers no metal, no barrel and no warehouse receipt.
