Aztec is a privacy-focused layer-2 built on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs, designed to let smart contracts and transactions stay confidential by default while still being verifiable onchain — a different emphasis from most L2s, which optimize purely for scale rather than shielding transaction details. The network only recently moved into an early live phase after years of research and development, with fuller private smart-contract functionality still being rolled out in stages. AZTEC is the network's native token, used for staking toward network security and, over time, governance as the protocol decentralizes further.
